What to Ask Before Hiring a Kids’ Party Entertainer in Bergen County
Before hiring a kids’ party entertainer in Bergen County, ask about age suitability, face painting capacity, package details, setup needs, and booking terms. Clear answers help you choose entertainment that fits your guests, space, and budget. I’m Johie, and I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. I bring that background and my experience entertaining children to parties across North Jersey. Here are the questions I recommend asking before you reserve your date.

How Will the Kids’ Party Entertainer Adapt to Your Guests?
Start with your guest list. Share the children’s ages, the expected headcount, and anything that helps your child feel comfortable. A preschool birthday in Ridgewood needs a different approach from a family celebration with toddlers and older cousins.
Ask, “What would you recommend for these ages, and why?” Listen for a specific explanation of the activities and pacing. My guide to entertainment for different age groups explains how those choices can change.
Then ask how participation works. Can a child watch before joining? Will anyone be called forward without volunteering? I want parents to share concerns about loud sounds, costumes, or being the center of attention. A useful conversation makes room for your child’s preferences, including the choice to sit something out.
What Should You Ask About Face Painting?
Ask how many children can be painted during the time reserved for painting. That is different from the full package length. An entertainer cannot paint faces and lead a group show at the same time unless another artist is working.
For my face painting service, full designs average 10 to 15 children per hour. Simple cheek art can be faster. If 20 children want detailed designs, ask about more painting time or another artist rather than assuming everyone will fit into one hour.
Request recent photos of the artist’s own work. Ask which products they use, how they clean tools between guests, and what their age and skin sensitivity policies are. Share any concerns before booking. Also ask how they manage the line and when they stop accepting new designs.
What Does the Price Include, and How Will the Party Flow?
Ask for a written description of the services, performer count, and entertainment time. Find out whether setup and packing happen within your booked time or outside it. Ask about travel, parking, extra time, and any other charges before comparing quotes.
A package name alone does not explain the schedule. Ask, “How would you arrange face painting, the show, and cake for my party?” If one person provides several activities, confirm how the time is divided.

What Must Be Confirmed Before You Reserve the Date?
Describe the actual venue, including stairs, parking, outdoor access, and available space. Ask what furniture, shade, electricity, or floor protection each activity needs. For my painting station, I ask for two chairs and a small table. A group show needs its own space discussion.
For an outdoor party in Paramus or Fair Lawn, agree on a weather backup. Ask when a location change must be decided and whether the indoor space can accommodate the planned activities. If your venue requires insurance documents, check that before paying.
Finally, request written booking terms. Confirm the deposit, balance deadline, cancellation and rescheduling rules, and what happens if the performer becomes unavailable. Start checking dates early; my booking timeline guide explains the planning considerations.
Questions Parents Ask Before Booking Party Entertainment
What information should I send with my first inquiry?
Send your date, town, venue type, preferred time, children’s ages, and estimated headcount. Mention whether you want a show, face painting, or a combination.
Can one entertainer provide a show and paint every child?
That depends on the headcount, design choices, and time available. Ask for a schedule showing how much time is reserved for each activity.
Should I choose the lowest quote?
Compare the performer, services, staffing, and time included before deciding. A lower total may cover fewer activities or less painting time.
Can children join without having their faces painted?
Ask what other activities are included for children who skip painting. Watching a show or joining a game gives them another way to participate.
How do I know my party date is confirmed?
Ask what steps complete the reservation, including any agreement or payment. Request written confirmation of the date, arrival time, location, and selected services.
